I caught up with independent romance author SARAH HILL and asked her if she'd be willing to do an interview with me. She graciously accepted and we became instant BFFs. I have not met many people who are as kind and humble as this gal. She doesn’t know a stranger. Her smile is just as big for an old friend as it is for someone she’s just met for the first time.
So far, Sarah has written five romance books (with more on the way);
The Sun Will Rise, Call of the Blue Heron, Hanging Stars on Big WIllow Creek, Since You, and newly released, Caterpillars in Glass Jars.(see links below)
Born and raised in Idaho, Sarah has been a storyteller her whole life. Growing up, her imagination was like a best friend she could take with her anywhere, creating stories wherever she went.
This played a big role as an adult when, in 2016, the company she worked for had some major changes. If she wanted to stay on with them, it would require her to move to another state. This girl is Idaho through and through. She wasn't leaving. She told her husband when her last day with the company ended, her dream was to write a book.
So he bought her a laptop and said, “Do it.”
Three years later, her first paperback came out. As she gained confidence, the next four were written much quicker.
Sarah said ideas come from everywhere. A phrase in a song, the scent of something that takes her to a memory, or just waking up from a dream and having that ‘Aha!’ moment that sends you running to your laptop.
We added a little whimsy to the interview with the question, 'Who in history or present day would you love to meet?' She immediately answered, “Jane Austen, because she is the OG of romance!”
I wanted Sarah to tell us in her own words what her newest book,
Caterpillars in Glass Jars was about. She obliged with:
“It’s a small town romance that features friends to lovers, second chances, and a love triangle. It follows Jaynie, whose body doesn’t fit society’s opinion of what a beautiful body should be.”
Her earlier book Since You has some characters that visit Caterpillars. Each of Sarah’s books are stand-alone, but share some subtle details, each set in small-town Idaho.
Some advice from her to aspiring authors is if you get an idea, even if it's just one line, write it down! Telling yourself, ‘Oh, I’ll remember it later’, does not always work out. Sarah has taken her own advice and has several first chapters written for future books so she doesn't forget.
